Victoria Derby Day is followed by the world-renowned Melbourne Cup Day. Featuring Australia’s richest race, the Melbourne Cup, Melbourne Cup Day is an absolutely massive day of racing. The Melbourne Cup takes place on the first Tuesday of November every year. The Melbourne Cup, with a total purse exceeding $6 million, is the second-richest horse race in the world behind the Dubai World Cup, and the richest two-mile handicap. The Melbourne Cup is a handicap event, and as a result the horse with the lightest weight must always carry at least 49kg and the horse with the heaviest weight must carry at least 57kg. The Melbourne Cup receives hundreds of nominations from stables within Australia and also from right around the world. If the Melbourne Cup is the race that stops the nation, then Melbourne Cup Day is the day that stops Victoria. Hundreds of thousands of people attend the Melbourne Cup Carnival annually, and Melbourne Cup Day gets a fair share of that. Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Victoria. Crown Oaks Day follows Melbourne Cup Day two days later on Thursday. Featuring the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks, Crown Oaks Day is an exciting event not only for punters but also for racegoers. Raced over a testing 2500m and open only to three year old fillies, the Crown Oaks is a highly entertaining staying event. Crown Oaks is also known as Ladies’ Day, and as such it draws considerable numbers of women and has a greater than usual focus on fashion. The annual Flemington “Fashions on the Field” event takes place on Crown Oaks Day and has become a renowned event in its own right. Crown Oaks Day features an exciting race card with five black-type events, which include:

  • Group 3 Red Roses Stakes (1200m) – $150,000 – 3YO F SWP
  • Group 3 Begonia Belle Stakes (1100m) – $200,000 – M SWP

The Melbourne Cup Carnival wraps up with Emirates Stakes Day on Saturday two days later. Known as Family Day, Emirates Stakes Day boasts six black-type races, including two $1 million Group 1 events. Emirates Stakes Day has an emphasis on family-friendly racing and usually lives up to its name, with the majority of racegoers taking young family with them. Worth nearly $3 million in total prize money, the race program on Emirates Stakes Day includes:

  • Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) – $1 million – Qlty
  • Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) – $1 million – WFA
  • Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) – $300,000 – 4YO+ M SWP
